Coronary artery bypass grafting

Deep Dive

Going into detail on what this term means and how it relates to health guidelines. This article may be incomplete.

An artery or vein is sewn or stitched to a spot on a coronary artery downstream of the blockage. The LIMA (left internal mammary artery) which supplies blood flow to the chest wall is often redirected to the LAD (left anterior descending, or "widowmaker") because it is such an important vessel. Veins are usually used for branches of the LAD, the LCX (left circumflex) and the RCA (right coronary artery). But occasionally other arteries like the radial artery from your arm may be used as well.
